Possible to trim the shelf?

I like these shelves but they are a little longer than what I need.  Is it possible to shave off a few inches from one end?  I don't care about the finish because they will be wedged between other book cases so you won't be able to see the ends.  Just wondering if cutting off the end will compromise the stability of the shelf...?
